What is chest pain?

Chest pain refers to any kind of pain felt by a person in the chest area, anywhere from shoulders to chest. Chest pain should be taken seriously as at times it can be life threatening too.  It can be a sign of a serious heart problem or it can be due to some common problems which are not life threatening. Chest pain may vary in terms of intensity, duration and location of pain.

Symptoms of Chest pain can be heart related and non heart related. Hear related symptoms of chest pain includes chest pressure or tightness, back jaw or arm pain, fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea, abdominal pain, dizziness and pain during exertion. Other symptoms of chest pain include acidic taste in the mouth, difficulty in swallowing, fever, ache, chills, pain while breathing or coughing, pain while changing body position etc. Generally Chest pain is perceived as a sign of heart problem.

Causes of chest pain: Chest pain causes may be:

  • Heart Related: Heart related chest pain causes are heart attack, angina(blockage of blood vessels), myocarditis (inflammation of heart muscle), pericarditis (inflammation of sac around the heart), cardiomyopathy (disease of heart muscle), aortic dissection(condition involving tear of the aorta) etc
  • Gastrointestinal causes: Gastrointestinal causes are acid reflux, heart burn, gall stones, inflammation of the pancreas, Oesophagitis (disorders of oesophagus causing inflammation of the oesophagus lining)) etc.
  • Related to Lung: Lung related chest pain causes are pneumonia, viral bronchitis, pneumothorax ( leakage of air from the lungs), constriction of air passages due to asthama and other disorders like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

  • Other reasons: Other reasons of chest pain includes panic attacks and infection of nerve and skin after reactivation of chicken pox virus

Diagnosis and Treatment: Chest Pain can be diagnosed with the help of electrocardiogram, chest X ray, blood tests to measure enzyme levels, MRI, stress tests and angiogram(to find blockages of the arteries). Careful record of patient’s history may also be revealing.

Treatment depends on the causes of chest pain. If the pain is severe and suggesting of angina, the initial medications should be given soon to protect the heart. Treatments for heart-related causes of chest pain include medications, including nitroglycerin, clot-busting drugs, or blood thinners. Balloons or stents are used to open blocked arteries. Surgical repair of the arteries or bypass surgery is also recommended. Treatments for other causes of chest pain include insertion of a chest tube or related device for a collapsed lung. Antacids can be given for acid reflux and heartburns and anti-anxiety medications for chest pain related to panic attacks.
