CGA TEST

18/Dec/2017

Chromogranin A (CgA) is a test that measures the amount of chromogranin A in the blood. CgA is a protein released from neuroendocrine cells which secrete hormones in response to signals from the nervous system. It can give rise to a variety of tumours, both benign and malignant like carcinoid tumours, insulinomas, small cell lung cancers, and neuroblastomas. The CGA test may be used to diagnose neuroendocrine tumours, especially carcinoid tumours.

A doctor recommends a CGA Test when he feels that the signs and symptoms could be due to carcinoid tumour or neuroendocrine tumour. The symptoms include flushing of the face and neck (appearance of deep red color), diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, rapid heart rate, wheezing, coughing and difficulty breathing

Levels of CGA in CGA Test

Let us understand more about CGA test by Dawaiyatra experts. People not experiencing any symptoms and a normal chromogranin level are not likely to have neuroendocrine tumour.

High levels of CgA are found in patients with carcinoid tumours because carcinoid tumours release large quantities of the hormone associated with that tissue. Carcinoid tumours are slow-growing noncancerous or cancerous masses that form mainly in the gastrointestinal tract (especially in the appendix) and in the lungs. "The highest levels of serum chromogranin A (up to 1000 times the upper limit of the normal range) have been found in patients with metastatic carcinoid tumours.

The concentration of CgA has direct relation to the tumour burden or the mass of the tumor. If CgA levels are high before treatment and then fall, then it shows that treatment is effective. When the monitored CgA levels begin to rise, then it denotes a recurrence of tumour.

Collection of blood sample

  1. order to collect blood sample for a CGA Test, a needle is inserted into a vein in the arm. No test preparation is needed for collecting blood sample. However, the patients must be informed about normal precautions to be followed before collection of blood. Specific markers are useful for diagnosis, and are helpful indicators of the effectiveness of treatment particularly where tumour bulk may not change so much as tumour activity. Both chromogranin A and neurokinin A have been used as powerful prognostic indicators for midgut carcinoid tumours.
