Angioplasty Surgery

27/Jan/2018

The arteries of the heart can get blocked or narrowed due to cholesterol build up. This reduces the flow of blood to the heart causing chest pain. A blood clot is formed leading to complete blockage of the blood flow causing Heart Attack. The purpose of Angioplasty is to open blocked arteries bringing back normal flow of blood to the heart. Angioplasty does the task of widening the blocked or narrowed coronary arteries. There are different types of Angioplasty like:

  • Balloon Angioplasty: Balloon Angioplasty is done by passing a thin tube into the artery by performing a cut into the upper leg or arm. The balloon on the tip of thin tube is expanded thus widening the artery.
  • Laser Angioplasty: Laser Angioplasty is similar to Balloon Angioplasty. Instead of balloon at the tip of fine tube laser is used.
  • Coronary Atherectomy: This is also similar to balloon angioplasty but instead of balloon, special instruments are used which cut away the plaque.
  • Coronary stenting:  A stent is placed in the artery which prevents the artery from closing again.

Cost of Angioplasty in India using one stent comes to around 2-3 Lacs. The surgery cost will increase depending on the number of stents used. But still cost of angioplasty in India is still far less than what you spend in U.S. or Europe.
